PROJECT No. 104 – REPAIR ON THE CRACK IN CYLINDER LINER RLB 96
Problem Crack in Cylinder Liner RLB 96

The cylinder liner’s is 960 mm. The ship’s mechanic after conducting the necessary measurements, observed that the diameter has increased in length (obviously because of the crack) and has reached 965 mm. If the diameter reaches 966 mm the cylinder will stop functioning properly.
We noticed that at another point of the sleeve just above the lubrication point, and specifically at the junction point of the neck, the sleeve is thinned, and its amplitude reaches 1 millimeter. We also measured the crack’s length in the cylinder liner and is 3.64 meters and we found out that the cylinder liner was being pulled by the plunger. The same problem has been observed in the cylinder liner of cylinder one (1), where the head of the piston has been damaged due to friction . The actions to repair the damage are as follows:
Perimeter cleaning, using a 6 mm milling cutter in the area to be repaired.
External dressing and reinforcement of the rupture using multiple layers of carbon fibers as well as carbon fiber reinforcing nerves
Internal grinding and filling of the crack with high-temperature epoxy resins.
A 40-minute test was conducted where our company’s technicians lifted the 9-tons cylinder liner using lifting equipment. Afterwards they examined the crack and found out that the size of the crack hadn’t change at all.
